Alchemy of Souls: Lost in Translation & Koreans’ Perspective of AOS

During a recent conversation with a Korean friend (also watching AOS), she gave me confirmation that soul and energy do go together and are separate from the body. I was only able to assume as much based on this scene between the King and Jang Gang.

Often, things can get lost in translation which can affect international viewers’ understanding of things. My Korean friend said, “the word spoken is 기 = ki (spirit, energy)”. She explained that soul and energy are like a “package” deal, they go together. She said most Koreans think like this, “When someone who runs wild takes your energy, the person dies and when a person dies, it means the soul has already left the body”. Maybe this will help you all to recognize that power/energy does not come from the body. It’s more like energy=soul, not energy=body. Hope this makes sense!

Out of curiosity, I also asked her if Koreans think there are 2 souls in 1 body, and she said “no”. Most Koreans who are watching the show now only thinks there is 1 soul in the body and that “Mu Deok’s soul is gone” as in dead. She said most Koreans were just “confused about Jin Bu Yeon” since “the show can be really tricky”.

She said I was the only person (either internationally or domestically) to point out that soul swapping is process which must be carried out twice (i.e 1st time: to go to another person’s body; 2nd time: to go back to your original body). This goes back to my theory that the swap we saw between Mu Deok and Naksu was not the first time, but the second time. She also said, “You were the only one who pointed out that Mu Deok’s soul is gone because that’s how soul swap works.”

The word “swap” by definition is the exchange 1 thing for another of equal value. Therefore, “soul swapping” is the exchange of 1 soul for another soul. Meaning, it’s a 1 for 1 exchange. The whole 2 souls in 1 body idea is not “soul swapping”, it’s more like “soul combination”. She said if such a concept (soul combination) existed in the show, we would have seen an example of this by now in the show. Since we have not, the whole notion of 2 souls in 1 body is not true.

Anyways, just thought I would share with you all how Koreans have been viewing things in the show. I want to give a big thank you to my Korean friend who has been translating stuff for me as well as sharing Koreans’ perspective of AOS!!
